there are templates for doing that. To remind you: In the Settings, you can define the default values for the FormHeader, FormFooter, FormItem and FormLabel templates. in the form item properties, you can override these values. If you don't use anything, a table design will be created (to be compatible with older versions of the module). If you want to use more columns, you have to start with the normal items (in the Form Settings), and use colspan="x" for the normal stuff. Then you can use less columns for two fields side by side.
